We have to start talking about credible solutions to the crisis in social care

- The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee has published their report: Social care funding: time to end a national scandal, following their inquiry into social care funding.
- It states that £8bn should be spent immediately by the government to restore the quality of and access to adult social care in England to acceptable levels.
- It finds 1.4 million older people (14% of the population) had an unmet care need in 2018.
- It also claims the government should then introduce free personal care, funded through general taxation, over a period of five years.
Responding to the House of Lords economic affairs committee report Social care funding: time to end a national scandal, the deputy chief executive at NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery said:
“This report by the House of Lords sets out why addressing the crisis in adult social care is more pressing than ever.
“This year, we have seen the proposed policy green paper delayed time after time. We can not afford to wait any longer. It is clear that we must start talking about credible solutions and put in place action to deliver them.

“There is broad consensus around increasing social care funding and creating a fair and accessible system which protects the most vulnerable. How we pay for and deliver this is a political decision for government.
"Without addressing the social care challenge we risk devaluing every pound of investment in the NHS.

“That is why NHS Providers is one of 15 health organisations in the Health for Care coalition, led by the NHS Confederation, calling for urgent action to put social care back on a sustainable footing in the upcoming spending review.”
