Responding to the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) snap survey findings on the state of social care, the director of policy and strategy at NHS Providers, Miriam Deakin said:

"This survey reflects the considerable, and urgent pressures facing adult social care this winter, and beyond.

"It is good to see that this survey shows an increase in the reported home care hours being delivered, reflecting how hard social care colleagues are working to support people as demand rises.

"But it is extremely concerning to see that reports of care needs which cannot be met within current capacity increasing significantly. This report lays bare the fact that too many people are currently unable to receive the care they want and need.

"As with the NHS, social care staff are working flat out, while facing mounting pressures as a result of workforce shortages.

"Trusts will continue to work closely with the local social care sector - for example with flexible staffing to avoid closures - to support them wherever possible.

"We have also called on government to offer urgent support to social care colleagues to help recruit and retain essential care workers over the winter months."
