Benefits of the Yorkshire and Humber Shared Care Record
The Yorkshire and Humber Care Record, serves a population of around 8 million. The success of the YHCR can be attributed to the team adopting a lean principles-based delivery model:
- Focus on the problems and outcomes, not the technology
- Everyone is a partner and has a voice
- Continue to learn and develop to meet the future needs of services and patients. Having a dedicated team has been fundamental to the successful delivery
- Designed based on the needs of the user and to be safe and secure
The benefits have so far included: improvements in risk management of patients, improved end of care planning, staff efficiency (reduction in the time it takes to obtain information) and the ability to transfer ambulance data in real time to ED.
Reflections from the panel:
- Leadership must be collective, collaborative and flexible. This is underpinned by open communication and having a pragmatic attitude to the change that you are trying to create
- Don’t underestimate the importance of an empowered team, with the right skills in place to collaborate across organisational boundaries. These programmes need to have clinical buy-in from day one.
- Have a mission and a vision that is outcome focused on patients and people, not technology focused. This will help to shift the narrative away from it being seen as an IT project.
