Trusts welcome ‘hospital at home’ boost for virtual wards
05 July 2023
Welcoming an expansion of virtual wards to give many more children and young people 'hospital at home' care, Miriam Deakin, director of policy and strategy at NHS Providers, said:
"Trusts will welcome the ambition to roll out virtual wards to boost care for children and young people as part of existing plans to expand 'hospital at home'.
"But success depends upon sufficient funding for vital new technology and equipment to enable smarter working providing cutting-edge care. Now that the long-term workforce plan for the NHS has been published, these services will need to be supported by giving NHS and care professionals skills in new technologies and new ways of working.
"We must ensure too close engagement with patients and their families as new approaches to care are developed, making sure that new services are trusted by everyone and do not inadvertently exacerbate digital exclusion or health inequalities.
"Too many children and young people have long waits for acute, community and mental health services. More support and care at home and in the community will be an important part of the solution."
